Clothing at U.S. Penitentiary Alcatraz (1934-1963) was highly restrictive. Inmates were issued matching shirts, trousers, belts, and shoes. Correctional officers wore regulation uniforms. Uniformity in apparel, as in all aspects of prison life, was important--it helped prison staff spot deviations from the norm, like missing articles of clothing, which could be indicative of illicit behaviors like trading or escape planning.
