Experience history with a replica Alcatraz Inmate Spoon.

This replica Alcatraz Inmate Spoon, made from food-grade stainless steel, is based on historical artifacts in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Museum Collection.

At United States Penitentiary Alcatraz (1934-1963), prisoners ate three meals a day in the dining hall. Filled with the entire prison population during mealtimes, the dining hall was considered the most dangerous place on Alcatraz—it was where commonplace objects like tables, chairs, and tableware could easily be turned into weapons by angry inmates. Spoons, which could be bent, broken, sharpened, or twisted into dangerous blades, were frequently stolen. To deter theft, correctional officers counted utensils before and after each meal. Any prisoner caught with contraband silverware was punished.
