A small island in the middle of beautiful San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz was home to America's first "super-max" federal penitentiary, housing some of the country's most notorious law-breakers. Hollywood contributed to its darkly iconic status, creating movies that helped make it the focus of anxious fascination both locally and nationwide. High maintenance costs forced the prison to close, but in 1972, Alcatraz Island became one of the Golden Gate National Parks and today, more than 1.4 million people visit it each year.

A visionary as well as a bold and creative thinker, Mott led the plan to convert the Presidio of San Francisco from a military base to an NPS site. Today, in honor of his legacy, the new Presidio of San Francisco Visitor Center bears his name.
