Birds, flowers, and bears, oh my! Showcase your love of the Golden State with magnets from our Wild California Collection.

The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is our state flower. This beloved blossom was first cataloged in the Golden Gate National Parks. In 1816, a Russian scientific expedition sailing aboard the Rurik visited el Presidio de San Francisco, Spain's northernmost outpost in western North America. The ship's naturalist, Adelbert von Chamisso, noticed the brightly colored flowers that dotted the hills and documented them in his collection. He named the species after his friend and the expedition's surgeon, Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz.
