Birds, flowers, and bears, oh my! Showcase your love of the Golden State with magnets from our Wild California Collection.
With its distinctive orange and black markings and amazing annual migration, the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is one of the most famous butterfly species in the world. Each fall, millions of monarch butterflies west of the Rocky Mountains migrate to sunny coastal California and Mexico, where they wait out the winter months. You can spot wintering monarchs, clustered together in trees, at sites throughout the Golden Gate National Parks, including the Presidio of San Francisco, Fort Mason, and the Marin Headlands. Once spring returns, the monarchs will return home in search of milkweed plants where they can lay their eggs.
Did You Know?
The North American monarch butterfly is the only insect in the world known to make the same kind of annual, long-distance migration as birds or whales. Sadly, threats like pesticides and climate change are endangering this breathtaking natural phenomenon--in the last twenty years, California's winter monarch population has declined by approximately 90 percent. The National Park Service and partners like the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and Presidio Trust are working hard to protect this incredible animal.
