When inmates arrived at U.S. Penitentiary Alcatraz (1934-1963), they were escorted to the cellhouse and handed a copy of the island's Institution Rules & Regulations. Written by Warden Paul J. Madigan in 1956, the handbook served as a guide for inmates trying to successfully navigate their way through long sentences at the infamous prison.
