Did You Know?
During the 1950s and 1960s, Alcatraz inmates were issued a variety of blue, collared shirts made of chambray fabric. There was no one "definitive" inmate shirt, as the federal government supplied similar shirts to the Navy and other departments. Inmates were instructed how to wear their uniforms in Regulation 32 of the Institution Rules and Regulations they were given upon their arrival at the prison: "The standard inmate uniform consists of blue chambray shirt, trousers, belt and shoes. Your shirt will be buttoned except for the top collar button. The sleeves will be rolled down and buttoned. Keep your clothing neat, clean and in good repair at all times."
