The fog at San Francisco's Golden Gate is legendary. Created when moist ocean air drifts across the cold California current flowing parallel to the coastline, the fog is drawn inland through this narrow gap in the Coast Range. Mounted at mid-span and the south tower pier, the Golden Gate Bridge's fog horns have been guiding ships safely through the perilous strait into the San Francisco Bay since the bridge opened in 1937.
