Inmate Shirt - USP Alcatraz
Inmate Shirt - USP Alcatraz

“The standard inmate uniform consists of blue chambray shirt, trousers, belt and shoes. Your shirt will be buttoned except for the top collar button. The sleeves will be rolled down and buttoned. Keep your clothing neat, clean and in good repair at all times.”

– Regulation 32, U.S. Penitentiary Alcatraz Institution Rules and Regulations

Experience history with a replica Alcatraz Inmate Shirt.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Alcatraz inmates were issued a variety of blue, collared shirts made of chambray fabric. There was no one “definitive” inmate shirt, as the federal government supplied similar shirts to the Navy and other departments. During the Federal Penitentiary years of Alcatraz (1934-1963) inmates were given uniforms in the Clothing Room located by the showers. Today, visitors to the former maximum-security prison enter the cellhouse just as the inmates did, through the Shower Room by the Clothing Issue Room.

This replica shirt is based on historical photographs of Alcatraz inmates from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Museum Collection.
