Token - Alcatraz Commissary

This 50 cent token dates from the early 1900s when Alcatraz Island served as a U.S. military prison, and was used by soldiers and their families for making purchases at the island's Post Exchange (PX). An original Alcatraz PX token was found several years ago in a tidepool at the south end of the island, and is now stored in the museum collection of the Golden Gate National Parks. Dented and worn, the token had lost much of its detail after being washed around in the bay for decades. This replica was recreated to show the token in its original condition.
