The prison building, a three-story cellhouse with four cellblocks, was built between 1910 and 1912 when Alcatraz was still a military disciplinary barracks. When the island was transferred from military control to the Bureau of Prisons, the prison was updated and its cell bars were strengthened to better prevent escapes.
