Did You Know?
At United States Penitentiary Alcatraz (1934-1963), prisoners ate off metal trays at meal times in the dining hall. Since ceramics or glassware could easily be broken into shards and turned into weapons, tableware handled by inmates was made from metal. These utilitarian trays, like much of the equipment used in the penitentiary, were government-issued and originally designed for military use.
