This salt and pepper shaker set, made from food-grade stainless steel, is based on historical artifacts in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Museum Collection.
At United States Penitentiary Alcatraz (1934-1963), prisoners ate three meals a day in the dining hall. Filled with the entire prison population during mealtimes, the dining hall was considered the most dangerous place on Alcatraz. All tableware items used by inmates, including aluminum salt and pepper shakers, were made from metal. The reason was simple: ceramics and glassware could easily be broken into shards and turned into weapons.
